The Norwegian Government on 15.12.2020 Tuesday declared the final funding determination for climate project the Northern Lights CO2 transport and storage in Norway. It is known as Northern Lights which was designed as the shipping and storage component of Longship, a larger Norwegian project for carbon capture and storage. This project is essential for climate, carbon capture and storage. That’s the huge project’s partners are Equinor, Shell and Total. If Europe is to accomplish its carbon neutrality goals, many partners and supporter believe is fundamental.
“Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is seen as an important criterion for achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement. “Longship” will contribute significantly to the development of CCS as the largest climate project ever in the Norwegian industry and an effective mitigation measure. Working together with the industry, the project’s applicable ( step by step approach) has also been confirmed. I would like to thank Northern Lights partners Equinor, Shell and Total, and I look forward to our continued cooperation. ” said Minister of Petroleum and Energy, Tina Bru about approved that project.
Northern Lights will be an infrastructure for transporting CO2 to a terminal in Øygarden, one of the other capture areas for interim storage, before being transported by pipeline for permanent storage in a 2600-meter permanent reservoir under the seabed.
The project involves the development and operation of CO2 transport and storage facilities open to third parties. Thanks to the first cross-border, open-source CO2 transportation and storage infrastructure network, European industrial emitters will be offered the opportunity to store their CO2 safely and permanently underground.
Shell CEO Ben van Beurden also said: “The Norwegian government’s initiative, which will be the world’s first open-source CO2 transportation and storage project, demonstrates a real vision to contribute to development. Northern Lights was designed to provide a service to industrial emitters that can take action on emissions that can no longer be avoided. This is key to real progress in tackling climate change. At Shell, we will play our part in making this a reality. ”
Equinor CEO, Anders Opedal, explains: “This is a pioneering project covering the subject of CO2 transportation and the first of its kind, offering a solution to reduce emissions from industrial sources in Norway and Europe. We are ready to implement this project, which will be an important part of the solution to climate problems. We thank the Norwegian government and broad political support in making it a reality. I am sure that we will make this project a success together with our partners and suppliers. ”
Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of Total, said for the project: “The development of CO2 transport, carbon capture and separation chain is of great importance for the decarbonization of European industries. We are a long-established partner of Norway, a pioneering country with more than 20 years of experience in CCS, and today we thank the government for making the final investment decision possible to develop this project. CCS is the key to achieving carbon neutrality in Europe and a very effective step to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. ”
