Wallenius Wilhelmsen is organizing to create a ship that will be powered by wind. It is based on wind-powered Pure car and Truck Shipper that is anticipated to accomplish up to 90% decreased emissions compared to today’s best ships.
The ship form is planned to be prepared for agreement at a shipyard by the middle of 2022, it is named the Orcelle Wind and it will be finished by 2025. After that time, that vessel is ready for the high seas.
It constructs its structure on the Oceanbird designed by maritime consultancy Wallenius Marine. Wallenius Wilhelmsen will take the view forward by administering its sighting from Roro business and carry out an extensive viability assessment
Orcelle Wind will be analysed to check newly designed vessels that are related to safety and technical competences to see if it performs with the mandatory regulatory standards. Operational requires of the ship will also be controlled like the aptness for deployment on many global trade lanes and the capability to manoeuvre in bad weather in port.
Wallenius Wilhelmsen CEO Craig Jasienski said about positive aspects of the new ship: “Since 2008, we have been able to reduce CO₂ intensity by 33%, which is a significant step. But the journey towards zero emissions requires great strides forward. We believe Orcelle Wind is one of them.” Also, he added to his speech: “It will take the dedicated collaboration of our world-class customers, partners, and employees to make such a bold initiative as Orcelle Wind succeed. More than just evaluating the concept, we are committed to making this a success.”
Before building it, Orcelle Wind will have the volume to carry approximately 7,000 vehicles at speeds of 10k-12k under sail. Besides, the wind-powered vessel will be able to have the capacity to carry heavy machinery, breakbulk cargo, and cars with a length of 220m and a beamwidth of 40m.
In the final steps of new-designed ships, Wallenius Wilhelmsen will run a tender among the global yards and select the best propose. Although the accurate price of the ship is yet to be decided, creating the ship is anticipated to come at a premium owing to the extent of innovation it will be combined.
CEO Craig Jasienski concluded his speech: “I’m looking forward to the yards coming to us and saying they want to be the first ones to build a vessel which is going to significantly shift the needle in terms of carbon emissions. This is an incredible opportunity for us and our customers as it is for a yard to participate in absolute innovative solutions for the maritime industry. So which yard is going to be ready for that? I hope that yards are preparing themselves for this now because this is the future and we have to find different ways to solve the energy demands that we have and to reduce the carbon emissions on the way,”
